Soldiers of an Indian Army unit prepare to go out on patrol around Imphal in the build-up to the main Japanese assault. Indian troops followed several religions and supplying the Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs with their dietary requirements was difficult. Hindu soldiers could not eat standard ration bully beef and were issued instead with extra milk and clarified butter. (Author’s Collection)

A disabled Type 97 tankette of the Imperial Army is towed from the road where it was destroyed in fighting at Tamu, 30 miles south-east of Imphal. This type of light tank was armed with a 37mm main gun. This one was destroyed by soldiers of the 23rd Indian Division, which had been sent to defend Tamu. There were few Japanese tanks available in Burma in 1944 and most, like this lightly armoured and poorly armed model, were soon destroyed. (Author’s Collection)
